Parted - Body Tracking and Projection Mapping

Body projection mapping had been a long-term ambition of mine. I had already experimented with it a few years earlier, in a project in Paris, but wanted to reach a new level of accuracy. The full body is a different territory than a face or a torso: every joint moves, every muscle shifts, every contour changes shape with the slightest gesture. The projection had to follow each movement closely, delicate enough to feel less like an addition than a second skin.

It was in 2019 that Yae Doi brought a collaboration proposal with artist and director Daisuke Hashimoto, whose vision I connected with immediately. Together, the three of us spent about a year shaping system and content side by side, before filming with Mari Katayama, whose presence carried the piece. After years of quiet experimentation, this collaboration felt like a real step forward.

Beyond the technical challenge, we wanted to create a peculiar visual, strongly inspired by the Japanese painter Ito Jakuchu. The piece questions the relationship between identity and technology, and the perception of beauty and taboo within our societies.
