Technical Director / Facial Projection Mapping Technology
  • Original motion capture system customized for facial projection mapping (hardware and software)
  • Upgrade of the facial projection mapping software Live Mapper

This was the second time working within the Ghost in the Shell universe, nearly a decade after contributing brain visualization work for the 2008 remaster. A promotion video using facial projection mapping was created for the Japanese theatrical release, featuring professional wrestler Riki Choshu, shot on location at a Yokohama water treatment plant, whose industrial atmosphere suited the film's world well. It was also the system's first use outside a controlled studio environment, bringing new challenges such as reflections of the surrounding pipes.

The facial tracking relied on both my original motion capture system and the Live Mapper software. Improvements to the tracking algorithm made it possible to reduce the setup to just three cameras and three markers, while achieving even greater accuracy and stability than before. Real-time relighting was also used more heavily than in previous projects, with the virtual light's position adjustable live to add dynamism and realism to the final shots.
